New education requirements to work in real estate

The minimum education requirements for working in real estate are changing.

If you want to start a career in real estate or are considering upskilling to become a licensed real estate agent, the education requirements will change substantially from 23 October 2020.


The Estate Agents (Education) Regulations 2020 (the proposed Regulations) will prescribe the courses of education for:

The proposed education requirements reflect significant changes to standards of competency for estate agents and agents’ representatives. These requirements draw on a new training package for the real estate industry that was developed following a national review. This page provides a summary overview of the education pathways available.

Please Note: All details regarding the new education requirements are not available yet. Details provided here are subject to change as further information becomes available. 
 


STARTING WORK IN REAL ESTATE (AGENT’S REPRESENTATIVE) 

 

This course covers the education component required by the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) to work as an Agents Representative.

As an Agent’s Representative you can work for a Licensed Real Estate Agent and undertake a broad range of duties and responsibilities such as sales, property management, business broking and buyer’s advocacy. Successful completion of the Agent’s Representative Course can lead you to many exciting career opportunities including:

  • Auctioneering

  • Business Broking

  • Buyer’s Agency

  • Commercial Property Management

  • Commercial Property Sales

  • Owners Corporation Management

  • Residential Property Management

  • Property Valuations

  • Residential Property Sales
 

Current Requirements (available till 22 October 2020)

The current course includes three units of competency from CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate)
 

  • CPPDSM4007A - Identify Legal & Ethical Requirements of Property Management to complete agency work

  • CPPDSM4008A - Identify legal and ethical requirements of real estate sales to complete agency work

  • CPPDSM4080A - Work in the Real Estate Industry
     

Although nationally recognized, students are not eligible for any government funding to complete this course.
It is important to note that these Units are not directly equivalent to any Units in the new requirements.

New Requirements (from 23 October 2020)

The entry level education required to work in real estate will be a Certificate IV (CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice)

  • 18 Units of Competency which includes 5 Core Units and 13 Elective Units

  • All the Elective Units from at least 2 Groups must be selected

Students enrolled in this course can seek government funding (rules apply). Further details to be available soon.

BECOME A LICENSED REAL ESTATE AGENT
 

Often known as the “License Course”, this is the minimum education qualifications required to obtain your Estate Agent's license.

 

Current Requirements (available till 22 October 2020)

CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate) was the qualification prescribed by the Victorian Business Licensing Authority, as the educational requirement to apply for an Estate Agent’s licence in Victoria.

  • 24 Units delivered over 8 clusters

  • Includes the 3 Units that make up the current Agents Representative Course
     

It is important to note that these Units are not directly equivalent to any Units in the new requirements.

New Requirements (from 23 October 2020)

The minimum education qualifications required to apply for an Estate Agent’s Licence will be:

  • Certificate IV (CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice) – 18 Units

AND

  • Diploma (CPP51119 Diploma of Property) - 12 Units

 

It is important to note that these Units are not directly equivalent to any Units in the current CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate).

Option 1, available till 22 October 2020
 

  • Enrol in the current CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate)

  • You must complete all 24 Units (21 Units if you have already completed the current Agent’s Representative Course) by September 2021

  • You can use this educational outcome to apply for an Estate Agent’s License

  • From October 2021 the BLA will require completion of the new qualification for any new registrations

Option 2, from 23 October 2020
 

Must complete 30 Units required to apply for an Estate Agent’s License.

  • Certificate IV (CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice) – 18 Units
    AND

  • Diploma (CPP51119 Diploma of Property) - 12 Units.

 

It is important to note that these Units are not directly equivalent to any Units in the current CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate). Some recognition of work experience may be available, details to be confirmed.
