Unique Student Identifier (USI)

The Commonwealth Government has mandated through Section 14 of the Student Identifiers Act (2014) the implementation of the USI (Unique Student Identifier) for all accredited vocational training.

From 1 January 2015, any Registered Training Organisation awarding nationally recognised accredited units of competency, whether it be a single unit or a full qualification, may not issue a Statement of Attainment, Transcript or Certificate to a student who does not have a Unique Student Identifier.

The Unique Student Identifier is like a Tax File Number, but its usage is limited to the sphere of vocational education.  You are invited to visit the USI website www.usi.gov.au for information (including privacy parameters if you have any concerns.

There is an advantage for the learner in this however: a large part of the scheme is to provide to students, through the USI portal, a portable folio of qualifications.

In many most instances, RTOs have asked the students to register a Unique Student Identifier themselves prior to, or as part of, enrolment.  Secring this Identifier is the responsibility of the student.  The REIV strongly encourages students to obtain their Unique Student Identifier as part of enrolment.  As our compliance obligation is not simply collecting this number but verifying it with against the national database, any delay or data error may needlessly delay the award of your Certificate or Statement of Attainment.

For new REIV enrolments, the enrolment form already has a section that captures the required information. However, should you wish to enrol online for our Agent's Representative course, you will need to submit a form that contains this and other demographic details mandated at State and Commonwealth levels for vocational education.

For previously enrolled 2014 students for whom a qualification or Statement of Attainment is still pending for 2015 or beyond, you will also need to have a Unique Student Identifier generated and verified.  Access the Demographics form and follow the instructions for submission so we can expedite the award of your Certificate and/or Statement of Attainment.

In either case above, this form should be posted to the REIV or (preferably) scanned and emailed to [email protected]

Should you have any questions on the USI, please contact the REIV Learning & Development at 9205 6666 or at [email protected].
